Tomato Rasam ( without tamarind)

 

Rasam, is a part and parcel of everyday menu, in a South Indian, especially in Tamilian household .There are myriad ways to make a rasam , each tasty , tangy and delicious in its own way.

Rasam is generally made from tamarind . Many other spices or herbs are added in various combinations to make them different and unique .

The following rasam is made from country tomatoes alone  and tastes heavenly .

 

Ingredients

  1. Tomatoes        2 ( big)
  2. Salt                 3/4 teaspoon
  3. Cooked Tuvar dal water  1 cup
  4. Cumin seeds        1/4 teaspoon
  5. Black Pepper ( powder)   1/4 teaspoon
  6. Lemon juice  2 tablespoons
  7. Ghee 1 teaspoon
  8. Mustard 1/2 teaspoon
  9. Curry leaves  few
  10. Coriander leaves ( chopped )   few

Method

  • Cook the tomatoes in 1 cup water , till the peels comes off .
  • Peel the tomatoes and mash the pulp. Add salt , black pepper , cumin seeds and water (remaining   from boilin) . Add , an additional  half a cup of water  , and cook in low heat .
  • Add cooked dal water after  six minutes or so  . Cook again for two minutes and remove from fire
  • Season with mustard in ghee . Garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves .
  • Lemon juice can be squeezed and added too , as a garnish.
  • Aromatic rasam is ready . Eat it when hot .
