Chow Chow or Bangalore brinjal or Chayote squash is common vegetable which is available in plenty in Southern parts of India. Its made into simple curry ,added with other vegetables to make Avial and Poritha Kuzhambu . Thogaiyal , Sambhar Saadam , Bisi Bele Bath etc. If koottu is prepared and it tastes absolutely divine when served with hot rice.

- Chow chow (chopped medium size) 2 cups
- Moong dal or Green gram dal 1/2 cup
- Salt as desired
- Coconut 1/2 cup ( grated) ( optional)
- Oil 1 teaspoon
- Mustard 1/2 teaspoon
- Green chilies 4 ( chopped fine )
- Curry leaves few ( torn into two)
- Turmeric Powder 1/2 teaspoon

- Soak the Moong dal for ten minutes or so.
- Pressure cook the Chow chow and dal ,adding salt , turmeric powder and curry leaves till soft . Mostly it gets done in two whistles .
- In a shallow pan, add oil and heat it. Add mustard and green chilies . When mustard crackles , swirl it around the koottu.
- Sprinkle coconut on top and mix well .
