Raw Mango Dal

 

Summers are the season, when raw mangoes come to the market . The Indian cuisine has many recipes ,which use green raw mangoes to make tasty dishes . One of them is the Raw Mango Dal . Its also known as Mammadikaya Pappu in Andhra Pradesh . This tangy sour sweet dal ,is absolutely lip smacking . It gets done very quickly in a pressure cooker and can be served with hot rice and pickle .

Choose firm slighlty sour fibrous raw mangoes , for this dish .

Ingredients

  1. Mangoes   1/2 cup ( peeled and chopped into medium pieces )
  2. Tuvar dal  1  cup  ( soaked in 2 cups of water )
  3. Turmeric Powder 1/2 teaspoon
  4. Salt 2 teaspoons
  5. Hing/ Asafoetida   1/2 teaspoon
  6. Ghee or Sesame oil 2 teaspoon
  7. Mustard 1 teaspoon
  8. Green chilies 2 ( chopped fine )
  9. Red chilies 4 ( broken into two )
  10. Curry for garnish          few

 

Method

  • Pressure cook the dal , adding the mango pieces , turmeric powder , salt , till the dal is soft and mushy .
  • Season with mustard , green chilies . red chilies and hing .
  • Garnish with curry leaves .
  • Chopped ginger , garlic can be added to the seasoning and shallow fried .
  • Coriander Powder , Fenugreek powder and some Chili powder can be added to the dal , to make it more spicy  and flavorful.
