Brinjal Jaggery Tamarind Koottu / Kathrikai Vella Puli Koottu

Brinjal Puli Koottu is  tangy,  sour ,sweet dish which is a accompaniment with rice . The dish can be made with a  variety of vegetables like Cluster beans , Plantain flower , Chayote squash , Sabre beans . This is  a traditional recipe , which is not cooked much nowadays . a tasty quick , vegetarian side dish .

Ingredients

  1. Brinjals ( small variety )  12
  2. Tamarind     lemon size
  3. Salt    1 1/2 teaspoons
  4. Turmeric Powder    1/2 teaspoon
  5. Sambar Powder     2 teaspoons
  6. Grated coconut        1cup
  7. Sesame oil   1 tablespoon
  8. Mustard          1 teaspoon
  9. Urad dal           2 teaspoons
  10. Bengal gram (Chana ) dal       2 teaspoons
  11. Hing( Asafoetida )  1/2 teaspoon
  12. Curry leaves    few
  13. Rice flour   2 teaspoons ( optional)
  14. Jaggery Powder  1 teaspoon

Method

  • Soak the tamarind in one cup of water.  After fifteen minutes, extract thick juice .
  • Slit the brinjals into thin slices . In a thick bottomed kadai , add oil and heat it .
  • Add mustard and when it splutters , add urad dal, chana dal  ,curry leaves and turmeric powder . Add the sliced brinjals and shallow fry  for a minute or two .
  • Add the extracted juice and salt and cook in low heat , till they come to a boil . Add sambar powder and  hing,  stir .
  • Cook , till they become thick and brinjals become soft .
  • Add 2 tablespoons of water to rice flour and add to the boiling koottu . Add jaggery powder and mix well .
  • After a boil , the koottu becomes thick and remove from fire .
  • Serve with rice .
