Summers are the season, when raw mangoes come to the market . The Indian cuisine has many recipes ,which use green raw mangoes to make tasty dishes . One of them is the Raw Mango Dal . Its also known as Mammadikaya Pappu in Andhra Pradesh . This tangy sour sweet dal ,is absolutely lip smacking . It gets done very quickly in a pressure cooker and can be served with hot rice and pickle .
Choose firm slighlty sour fibrous raw mangoes , for this dish .
Ingredients
- Mangoes 1/2 cup ( peeled and chopped into medium pieces )
- Tuvar dal 1 cup ( soaked in 2 cups of water )
- Turmeric Powder 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt 2 teaspoons
- Hing/ Asafoetida 1/2 teaspoon
- Ghee or Sesame oil 2 teaspoon
- Mustard 1 teaspoon
- Green chilies 2 ( chopped fine )
- Red chilies 4 ( broken into two )
- Curry for garnish few
Method
- Pressure cook the dal , adding the mango pieces , turmeric powder , salt , till the dal is soft and mushy .
- Season with mustard , green chilies . red chilies and hing .
- Garnish with curry leaves .
- Chopped ginger , garlic can be added to the seasoning and shallow fried .
- Coriander Powder , Fenugreek powder and some Chili powder can be added to the dal , to make it more spicy and flavorful.
