Omavalli Rasam

 

Omavalli, is fragrant herb , which is easily grown in balconies or terraces . It hardly, needs any maintenance . Omavalli or Karpooravalli , has host of  benefits . It cures mild colds , congestion of chest  in children . It has antiviral properties  and anti fungal properties . The juice  made from the leaf can be used to cure headaches . It cures host of skin diseases and respiratory ones too. If you suffer from diarrhea , indigestion and bloating of the stomach , eat a few  leaves  for a day or two , to get some relief . To get benefit of the leaves , add them in you diet , regularly .

Rasam made from the leaves is extremely delicious and can be prepared easily.

Ingredients

  1. Tamarind a marble size
  2. Omavalli leaves   5 to 6
  3. Water        2  cups
  4. Salt        1 teaspoon
  5. Hing or Asafoetida   1/4 teaspoon
  6. Turmeric Powder 1/2 teaspoon
  7. Curry leaves   few
  8. Ghee 1 teaspoon
  9. Mustard  1/2 teaspoon
  10. Dried Red chilies   2 to 4 ( broken )
  11. Cumin seeds Powder 1/4 teaspoon
  12. Black Pepper powder 1/4 teaspoon
  13. Coriander Powder 1/2 teaspoon
  14. Tuvar dal 1 tablespoon ( cooked )

Method

Method

  • Soak the tamarind in 2 cups of  water for 10 minutes . Extract juice .
  • Add salt, curry leaves , hing , turmeric powder and boil.  Add the other powders and stir well.
  • Cook in low heat for  6 to 8 minutes .
  • Add one cup of water to the dal . Mash well and add to the boiling rasam . Add the leaves and cook for two to three minutes .
  • Season with mustard and red chilies in ghee .
  • Garnish with coriander leaves, if desired .
  • Rasam powder or sambar powder can be added instead of coriander powder . cumin seeds powder and black pepper powder .
