Yam Thuvaiyal or Chenai Thuvaiyal is a delicious side dish with rice . Its very easy to make and is very nutritious too . Different types of thuvaiyal can be made . Some of the popular ones are, Mint Thuvaiyal, Coconut Thuvaiyal, Curry leaves ,Thyvaiyal , Paruppu Thuvaiyal , Onion Thuvaiyal , Puli Thuvaiyal etc .
Thuvaiyal is also pronounced , as thogaiyal and is a thick chutney , which is generally served with rice . This vegetable can be stored for a long time in your kitchen , without getting spoilt . But care should be taken while chopping the vegetable . sesame oil or coconut oil should be smeared on both hands , before chopping the yam . Use gloves while cutting , if allergic .
Ingredients
Ingredients for Yam Thuvaiyal (serves 4 )
- Yam 1 cup ( roughly chopped )
- Dried Red chilies 10 (broken into two )
- Tamarind a marble size
- Urad dal 1 teaspoon
- Hing / asafoetida 1/4 teaspoon or ( Gatti Perungaayam a small bit )
- Mustard 1 teaspoon
- Sesame oil 5 teaspoons
- Salt 2 teaspoons ( Rock salt is preferable )
Method
- In a Kadai / wok / Cheenachatti , add oil and heat .
- Add urad dal ,red dried chilies and asafoetida / hing . Shallow fry till light brown . Drain and keep aside .
- In same oil , add mustard and let it splutter .
- Grind the red chili , along with tamarind, salt to a coarse texture , adding just a few drops of water .
- Add the chopped yam , too and grind again to rough paste . Add mustard and urad dal ,grind lightly .
- Absolutely delicious thuvaiyal is ready .
- While making the thogaiyal , shallow fry the yam pieces , and then grind with rest of the ingredients , especially if you are allergic or if the yam is old .
- While cutting the yam , smear lots of coconut oil or sesame oil , on your palms,to prevent allergic reactions .
- Use gloves while chopping , if you are allergic to cutting yam.
