Sundal is rich in protein , highly nutritious snack ,filling ,low calorie and very easy to make too. The Lentils need to be soaked for 8 to 10 hours and then they can be seasoned according to one’s taste . Sundals are generally made daily for 10 days during Navaratri , as an offering to Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Durga. Adding onion is usually avoided , if made as a Neivedyam or Prasadam. However, if you are making on other days , as a snack , you can add onions and masala powder ,to make it more tasty .
Mostly Dried lentils are used to make Sundal , however fresh peas beans could be used too ,to make Sundal .
Ingredients
- Dried White Peas 2 cups
- Mustard 1 teaspoon
- Green chillies 4 ( chopped fine)
- Asafoetida 1/4 teaspoon
- Turmeric Powder 1/2 teaspoon
- Oil /Ghee 1 tablespoon
- Ginger 1 teaspoon ( grated)
- Curry leaves few
- Coriander leaves ( chopped fine )
- Onions 1 ( chopped fine ) ( optional)
- Coconut grated 1/2 cup ( optional)
- Salt 2 teaspoons
- Lemon juice 1 tablespoon ( optional)

- Soak the dried beans for 8 to 10 hours . Drain and pressurecook adding salt , till it becomes soft . Mostly three whistles in the pressure cooker will make it soft . If you are serving for the elderly or very young children, cook for one more whistle till it becomes completely soft .
- Ina saute pan , add oil and add mustard . When it crackles , add green chilies , asafoetida , turmeric powder ,ginger and saute for 30 seconds .
- Add the curry leaves and chopped onions and saute till they become transluscent .Season over the peas and mix well .
- Sprinkle gratings of coconut and coriander leaves ,mix well . Pour lemon juice and mix, to get a tangy Sundal to relish.
