Oats Payasam / Oats Pudding

 

 

 

 

 

Oats is a staple in the Indian diet nowadays . Its a favourite breakfast dish , for all age groups. It  shot into prominence, due to its weight reducing properties and many doctors recommending it for the diabetics . Its very quick to make and is easy to digest too . Adding some fruits and nuts to it makes it a wholesome breakfast . However , instead of buying instant oats which gets cooked easily , buy the steel cut variety , which is more healthy .

There are umpteen  Indian recipes which are use oats , like Oats Kesari , Oats Upma , Oats Dosai , Oats Idly Oats , Oats Vadai etc. The following recipe is Oats Payasam , which very tasty and quick to make . It can be even fed to babies who are eight months and above or to the elderly, safely.

Ingredients

  1. Oats  ( Steel cut)half a cup
  2. Water one cup
  3. Milk 2  cups
  4.  Country Sugar  3 table spoons
  5. Ghee 1 teaspoon
  6. Cashewnuts 2  tablespoon
  7. Raisins 1 tablespoons
  8. Saffron ( soaked in a tablespoon of milk ) 4 strands
  9. Cardamom Powder half a teaspoon

Method

  • Heat the water and add oats . Cook till it becomes  soft . Add milk and mix well . Add the sugar and stir till it dissolves .
  • In a saute pan, add ghee  and heat . Add the cashewnuts and raisins and stir till the cashewnuts , become light brown and raisins swell up.
  • Add to the Payasam . Add cardamom powder  and saffron. Mix well and serve .
  • This can be made as Prasadam or Neivedyam too, during Pooja days .

Note

  • Coconut milk or Almond milk can be used instead of ordinary milk.
  • If Full cream milk is used during special occassions to the payasams , the taste of the payasam will be enhanced.
