Veppilaikatti/ Citron Leaves Powder

 

Veppilaikatti is a delightful powder, made from Citron leaves or Narthai Elai . These are flavorful and extremely tasty , Not so long ago , these were made at home , however due to modernisation , many houses turned to apartments , the tree is no longer found in many backyards. The leaves are mixed with some basic spices and pound or powdered , to make a fragrant spicy mixture . Generally its eaten with curd rice . Its also served with idli or dosai , with a generous dose of sesame oil over it.

Citron leaves , are rich in iron  and calcium . Its  also is used to calm the nerves and  as a cure for insomnia. The citron leaves are very useful , to cure all stomach related disorders . Its said to cure Vatha and Pitha related disorders , according to Ayurveda.. The citron leaves can be combined with lemon leaves and curry leaves, to make this powder.

The addition of Carom seeds or Omam, makes this a weight loss powder too.

Ingredients for Veppilai Katti

Ingredients

  1. Citron Leaves ( Narthai Leaves )  4 cups
  2. Rock Salt   1/4 cup
  3. Dried Red Chilies    8 numbers
  4. Omam ( Ajwain)  1 teaspoon
  5. Hing ( Gatti Perungaayam )  half an inch

Method

Method to make Veppilai Katti

 

  • Take the citron leaves and wash them well . Dey in shade till they are completely dry.
  • Remove veins from the middle and keep aside .
  • Grind all the ingredients, in a food processor , coarsely to a not so smooth powder.
  • This powder wil remain unspoilt for a long time .
  • Refrigerate if necessary.

Note

  • You can add a handful of lemon leaves or curry leaves to the mixture , before grinding .
  • This will give the powder a unique flavour .
  • Use healthy ,bright ,fresh leaves and remove center vein , compulsorily.
