Sundal is a common snack , which is healthy ,filling and quick to make . It provides lots of nutrients , vitamins and minerals . A variety of these Sundals, are specially made on Navaratri , a festival in Southern India , where Goddess Devi , is worshipped in various forms for nine days . Bommais or Golu Bommais of various Gods and Goddesses , in the Hindu Scriptures , made in clay or Plaster of Paris are displayed , on steps . These steps are generally in odd numbers and are decorated and beautified with flowers , lights and colourful clothes . Sundal is the main Prasadam , offered to the Goddess on these nine days . Married women and young girls are worshipped as Devis and offered, Thamboolam of betel leaf , nuts , turmeric , flowers , fruits ,blouse bits and coconut .
The below sundal is very healthy and tasty , made out of Green gram . They have high anti oxidants , lowers cholesterol , hydrates the body , lowers blood pressure and aids weight loss.
Sprouting provides better digestion of the lentil , increases the nutritive value and an excellent detox agent .
Ingredients
- Green gram dal 1 cup ( soaked for 6 to 8 hours )
- Salt as desired
- Oil / Ghee 1 teaspoon
- Mustard half a teaspoon
- Asafoetida ( Hing ) 1/4 teaspoon
- Dried red chilies 4 ( broken into two)
- Curry leaves few
- Lemon juice 1 tablespoon
- Grated coconut 1/4 cup
Method
- Drain the soaked green gram . Let all the lentils be dry , totally .
- Keep them in a casserole / a sprout maker / a broad vessel, covered. After 8 hours , you see they have sprouted .
- In a saute pan , add oil / ghee . Add mustard , red chilies , curry leaves and asafoetida .
- When the mustard crackles , add the coconut, sprouts and salt . Stir for a minute .
- Add lemon juice . Tasty green gram sundal is ready .
