Neer Mor or spiced buttermilk, is made all over India as a welcome drink , especially during the summers . Milk and curd are a part and parcel of daily Indian menu. In South India , curd is eaten with rice and relished as a drink too . A lot of spices , are added to buttermilk and the result is a flavorful and a tasty drink. The summers are scorching in Southern India, and lots of salt is lost through sweating. The buttermilk helps in energising and replenishing the body . The buttermilk is prepared in huge quantities, in villages and kept at the entrance, so that travelers who pass by , who are tired and weary, can partake the drink and feel refreshed .
The preparation of drink is very easy and needs not many ingredients .
Neer Mor or Buttermilk is prepared during Rama Navami festival . Its offered as a Neivedyam to Lord Rama .
Ingredients
- Curd 2 cups
- Water 8 cups
- Ginger grated 2 teaspoons
- Green chilies 4 ( chopped)
- Cumin Powder 1/2 teaspoon
- Asafoetida / Hing 1/2 teaspoon
- Curry leaves few ( torn into two)
- Coriander leaves few ( chopped )
- Ice cubes 10 to 12
- Salt 2 teaspoons
Method
- Grind ginger and green chilies . Add water and salt to the curd and churn well with a churner or blend in a blender.
- Add the ginger chili paste, hing and cumin powder . Stir . Garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves .
- Serve chilled topping it with ice cubes .
- You can season the buttermilk , with mustard .
- Adjust the level of spices and herbs according to one’s taste .
- Instead of green chilies , pepper powder can be used .
