Sesame Rice/ Ellu Sadam/ Til Ka Chawal

 

Sesame seed rice is frequently made in South India especially Tamilnadu. Its made during auspicious month of Aadi month( July – August) or  during  Purattasi  ( Sept – Oct) . Kalantha Sadam or mixed rice recipes are popular in South India , as this area is primarily a rice eating region. Ellu or Sesame is also considered very auspicious for  Lord Shani in Hindu culture . It is said that when one is inflicted by the Saturn’s ill effects , one should light sesame  oil wick in front of Lord Shaneeswara especially on a Saturday. The Lord Shani teaches us to repent for our sins and helps in attaining spiritual maturity during our lifetime. The teachings help us to lead a better life and set a good example to our children.

Some houses make Sesame rice as an offering on all Saturdays . This is a delicious dish and can be made and relished other wise too .

  1. Cooked Rice  2 cups
  2. Sesame seeds half cup
  3. Dried Red chilies 4
  4. Salt 2 teaspoon
  5. Urad dal 1 teaspoon
  6. Ghee or Oil 4 teaspoon
  7. Mustard 1 1/2 teaspoon
  8. Green chilies 2
  9. Red chilies 2
  10. Asafoetida half a teaspoon
  11. Curry leaves few

Method

Method

  • In a small pan , dry roast the sesame seeds, after it splutters , remove and keep aside.
  • Dry roast Urad dal  and red chillies , till urad dal  turns light brown.
  • Powder along with asafoetida , sesame seeds to a fine powder.
  • In the same sauce pan , add oil or ghee . when it gets hot add , mustard ,  curry leaves chopped green chilies and red chilies .
  • Spread  rice on a plate , add the prepared powder and salt on the  rice , add the seasonings .
  • Mix with a fork .
  • Sesame Rice is ready.

Note

Note

  • The rice cooked should be separate not mushy .
  • Peanuts or Cashewnuts can be added to the  Sesame Rice, while seasoning.
  • Shredded coconut too can be added to the seasonings.
