One of the traditional recipes from Tamilnadu from the Thamizh Brahmin community. Its a simple , vegan recipe which is sublime in taste , healthy and easy to make .
Generally its made as a breakfast or an evening snack, which is served along with chutney .

- Rice 2 cups
- Dal (Tuvar, Urad and Chana ) 1/2 cup (altogether)
- Sesame oil 6 teaspoons
- Mustard 1 teaspoon
- Urad Dal 2 teaspoons
- Green chilies 6 to 8 chopped fine
- Ginger grated 1 teaspoon
- Curry leaves few
- Water 3 1/2 cups to 4 cups
- Salt 2 teaspoons
- Coconut shredded 1 cup
- Asafoetida 1/2 teaspoon
MethodMethod
- Soak the dals for half an hour . Grind them to a coarse texture .
- Break the rice to semolina texture , in a food processor. Boil water in a separate vessel. Keep aside .
- In a thick vessel or kadai (Vengalai Paanai) , add oil and heat. Add Mustard . when it crackles , add Urad dal ,Green chilies, Ginger , Coconut, Curry leaves and stir.
- After a minute , add the coarse ground Dal , Rice rava and mix well . Add salt too.
- Gradually add the water , till it covers the mixture,
- Stir and cook in low heat.
- Cook for 2 to 3 minutes . When all the water is absorbed and the mixture resembles Upma , then remove from fire .
- See to that Upma is not too dry . If found dry , add a handful of water to it. Stir and mix well.
- Please also do not make the Upma very watery , otherwise you wont be able to make Kozhukattais.
- Let the mixture cool.
- Meanwhile keep the idli vessel ready . Add sufficient water to steam.
- Roll small balls or elongated kozhakattais from the Upma prepared.
- Steam in the idli vessel for 12 to 15 minutes.
- Cool and serve with chutney of your choice.

Note
The dal can be directly ground with rice to a rava like mixture and cooked as explained above.
They need not be soaked as mentioned above.
