Vazhathandu Pachadi/ Plantain Stem Pachadi/

 

 

 

The banana trees are found abundantly, in large independent houses , in Southern India. The leaves are used to serve food , the fruits are relished as it is, while the flowers are made into puttu and poriyals and the stem is prepared in a variety of ways . Its prepared as juice, as its good for stomach and kidneys , the poriyals and kootus are tasty and is rich in  fibre content . Its extremely low in calorie and when prepared with a little care , tastes delicious. Choose tender stems and slice them thin . As  you slice , remove the fibre which comes along with them . Chop the stem finely  and immerse in thin buttermilk for 20 minutes . The rest of the fibre can be removed , by dipping your finger or a spoon and swirling around the buttermilk. The fibre will get attached to the finger or the spoon. Remove and squeeze the chopped  stem and use as desired .

 

The Pachadi made from the plantain stem is highly delicious . It can be used as an ideal weight loss agent . It  reduces cholesterol and fat in the body , if eaten regularly.

Ingredients

  1. Chopped Plantain stem   1 cup
  2. Salt 1/4 teaspoon
  3. Curd    2  cups
  4. Green chilies   2 ( chopped fine)
  5. Oil 1 teaspoon
  6. Coriander leaves for garnish

Method

  • Add salt to the plantain stem and keep aside . After 10 minutes , squeeze out water .
  • Add the curd to the chopped stem and mix well ,
  • Season with mustard and green chilies .
  • Garnish with coriander leaves .
