Thirulnelveli Sodhi , is a side dish ,which is eaten with idiyappam , idli , dosai , aappam or even with set dosai. Its primarily a dish, made in Thirulnelveli parts , during weddings . Sodhi is a very aromatic, flavorful dish , which is made in coconut milk . Its nearly like a chettinadu kurma , with lentils . Onions , coconut milk , ginger , green chilies and moong dal, are a must for this dish. Use shallots or sambaar onions for this recipe .
Ingredients
- Moong dal / Green gram dal 1/4 cup ( soaked for 15 minutes )
- Coconut (grated) 4 cups
- Chopped vegetables 2 cups
- Green chilies 4 ( chopped )
- Shallots 1/2 cup ( peeled)
- Ginger ( grated) 1 tablespoons
- Curry leaves few
- Lemon juice 1 tablespoon
- Mustard 1 teaspoon
- Cashewnuts 2 tablespoons
- Coconut oil 2 tablespoons
- Salt as desired
Method
- Pressure cook ,the Moong dal, and potatoes ( 2 chopped into four ) in separate containers ,till soft .
- Grind the coconut with 2 cups of water . Filter and extract first thick milk.
- Again, add 1 cup water , grind , to get a thinner second milk. Add some more water , to get very thin third extract .
- Keep aside .
- Choose drumstick , beans , carrot , potatoes , peas etc for preparing the sodhi dish. cut all into medium sizes or in cubes .
- In a kadhai , add coconut oil and heat . Add mustard , green chilies and curry leaves . When they burst , add shallots and saute for a minute or two .
- When they become brown , add the chopped vegetables, . Stir and cook in medium heat . Add third extract of milk and cook .
- When they are cooked , add mashed dal . potatoes and mix well . Add the second extract of milk and cook in low heat till all mixes well .
- Add salt .
- Now add the first thick extract of coconut milk and cook for a few seconds ( 15 to 20 seconds ), in very low heat and remove from heat ,
- Garnish with lemon juice and coriander leaves .
- Flavourful Sodhi is ready . Can be eaten with rice too .
