Semolina Pongal / Rava Pongal

 

Semolina / Rava Pongal, is a simple quick sumptuous breakfast and a great way to start a day. Its tasty and its subtle flavours, make the Pongal a delicious , dinner option, too . Serve it along with a tomato chutney or gothsu. Do not skimp, on the ghee and use it  liberally , as the Pongal tastes heavenly , with ghee.

 

Ingredients

  1. Semolina / Rava  2 cups
  2. Moong dal ( Payatham Paruppu)  half a cup
  3. Ghee 3/4 cup
  4. Cashewnuts  12
  5. Cumin powder 1 teaspoon
  6. Salt 1 1/2 teaspoon
  7. Black Pepper Powder 3/4 teaspoon
  8. Ginger ( scraped)  1/2 a teaspoon
  9. Water 2 cups

Method

  • Dry roast the moong dal in a kadai , for a minute or two. Pressure cook, till very soft .
  • In the same kadai, add a tablespoon of ghee , add the cashewnuts and shallow fry till light brown. Keep aside .
  • Add rest of the ghee and heat it . Add cumin powder and black pepper powder . when it bursts , add the semolina and shallow fry .
  • When its fried for a minute . add water and salt , cook . When it becomes soft , add the dal and mix well .
  • Add curry leaves and garnish.
