Raw Jackfruit Curry / Idichakka Thoran / Palamusu Poriyal

 

The tender raw jackfruits are a delight,  to make into curries and eat. Raw Jackfruits start arriving by March,  in most parts of India . The ripe ones are indeed a delight to have , but the raw green ones too , make a delicious side dish to be had with rice . The tender raw green jack fruits , should be bought and made into a dish , in  a day or two . The outer thorny thick skin ,is to be removed and inner thick centre  stalk to be chopped off . A sharp knife is an absolute must  have While cutting the jackfruit , a milky gooey, sticky ,fluid flows out ,so keep a newspaper spread out on the place, you cut , Also grease your hands, before cutting .

Ingredients

  1. Tender  Raw Jackfruit ( chopped) 2 to 3  cups
  2. Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
  3. Salt 1 1/2 teaspoons
  4. Grated coconut 1/2 cup
  5. Coconut oil 4 teaspoons
  6. Mustard 1 teaspoon
  7.  Dried Red chilies   4
  8. Urad dal 1 teaspoon
  9. Asafoetida  1/2 teaspoon
  10. Curry leaves  few
  11. Cooked Thuvar dal  1/2 cup
  12. Sugar    1 1/2 teaspoons

Method

  • Cook the jackfruit pieces , adding turmeric powder in a pressure cooker till soft . Add salt and mix well .
  • In a kadai or wok , add oil and heat it . Add mustard , when it splutters , add urad dal ,asafoetida, red chilies and stir . Add the curry leaves  , sugar and cooked dal .
  • Add the cooked jackfruit and mix well . After a minute or so , add the grated coconut and give a stir .
  • Tasty curry is ready .
  • If desired , add sambar powder over the curry to make it flavorful.
