Poli/ ChanaDal Poli / Puran Poli/ Paruppu Poli

 

Poli is a sweet which is usually made on special occasions. its a well loved delicacy which is called Poli or Boli in Tamilnadu and Puran Poli in other parts of India.

Its chiefly made in Gujarat and Maharashtra , other than Tamilnadu  Andhra Pradesh ( Bobbatlu) and Karnataka ( Obbattu). The making  of Poli is the same in all regions, with a few variations .

This sweet is made from Chana dal and jaggery , eaten with good smearing of ghee.

For the filling 

  1. Chana Dal / Bengal gram dal/ Kadala paruppu  2 cups
  2. Jaggery 2  1/2 cups ( powdered)
  3. Coconut 1 cup Shredded
  4. Cardamom powder 1/2 a teaspoon

 

For the outer  covering 

  1. Maida 3 cups
  2. Salt half a teaspoon
  3. Turmeric Powder half a teaspoon
  4. Oil (unflavoured ) 1/4 cup
  5. Water
  6. Ghee ( for shallow frying ) 1/2  cup

  • Soak Chana dal for 2 hours .
  • Add the maida in a wide bowl. Add salt,  turmeric powder and mix well . Add the required amount of water , knead into a pliable soft dough.
  • Add oil and knead again . Keep covered  with a cloth for more than an hour .
  • After two hours , drain the chana dal and pressure cook the dal for 5 whistles , till it  becomes soft .
  • Take a deep bottomed pan , add the Chana dal Coconut and Jaggery . Mix well and cook in low heat  . The mixture will be watery , at first  and then solidify.
  • The moisture will be absorbed, the whole mixture will thicken and turn in the pan as a single mass and look like halwa .
  • Add cardamom powder at this stage , mix well .
  • Let it cool. When cooled , grind the Chana dal halwa, to a smooth paste without adding any water .This stage is very important . If the Chana dal mixture is not smooth, then it will be difficult to make the  Poli .
  • Make small lemon size balls of the Halwa.
  • Take a Dosai griddle or a Chappathi tawa. Heat it .
  • Pinch out a  big lemon size maida  dough and make a small cup of  it  in your palm . Add the chana dal ball filling  into it and close the edges . Seal at the top.
  • Roll the Poli with  a rolling pin , gently . Make a round like a thin roti .
  • You can use a plantain leaf or a butter paper too to make the Poli . Grease the surface and roll the maida balls into puris . Add stuffed ball in it.  close the edges and seal on the top .
  • With the fingers , press them to make a round roti .
  • Grease the tawa . Add the prepared poli and cook in low heat .
  • Shallow fry till golden brown. Flip the other side too and cook .
  • Serve hot and enjoy with another smear of ghee on top.

  • Please see to that the Chana dal mixture is as smooth as possible .
  • The procedure to make stuffed parathas can be followed in making the Poli.
  • The Poli can be stored and eaten for two days .
  • You can skip adding  coconut if desired .
