Plantain or vazhakkai is a common vegetable used as a accompaniment with rice. This simple, easy to cook vegetable is quite tasty too . Plantains are available throughout the year and and is a popular vegetable used In chips , avial , koottus and curries. The following recipe is quick to make and tastes good with rice and rasam.

Ingredients
- Two Raw banana or plantains (chopped medium sized),
- Salt 1 teaspoon,
- Cumin seeds ½ teaspoon,
- Dried red chillies 4 to 5 ,
- Coconut (grated) handful or ¼ cup
- 2 tablespoon oil,
- Mustard 1 teaspoon,
- ½ teaspoon black gram dal
- Asafoetida ¼ teaspoon,
- Curry leaves few.
Method
- Cook the raw banana with salt till soft but not mushy.
- Grind cumin seeds, red chillies and coconut to paste.
- In a shallow pan heat oil add mustard and black gram dal, curry leaves. As it sputters, add the cooked banana pieces and paste.
- Mix well and stir for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Sprinkle asafoetida powder , stir and remove from heat.
- Serve hot with Rice.
