Sundals are an ideal teatime snack, which are tasty and healthy too. During Navaratri festival in Tamilnadu , some communities worship Goddesses Durga ,Lakshmi and Saraswati on nine days. They make Sundal as a Neivedyam and offer to the Goddess . Married ladies and girl children are called and offered Neivedhyam and Thamboolam.
When Sundals are offered as Neivedyam , they do not have onions ,garlic or even ginger . Even prepared powders are’nt used to make the Neivedhyam. The Sundal is seasoned with mustard , urad dal, curry leaves and grated coconut.
But if one is making for tea time snack , one can add onions ginger , mango and sambar powder etc to enhance the taste of the Sundal.
Ingredients
- Raw Groundnuts 1 cup
- Grated coconut a handful
- Oil for seasoning 3 teaspoons
- Mustard 1 teaspoon
- Urad dal 1 teaspoon
- Green chilies 4 (chopped fine )
- Dried red chilies 4
- Hing ( Asafoetida) 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt to taste
- Curry leaves few
- Sambar powder ( optional) one teaspoon
- Onions ( finely chopped ) 1
- Coriander leaves few ( finely chopped )
Method
- Soak the groundnuts for an hour or so . Pressure cook to soft , for a whistle or two.
- In a sauce pan . add oil and heat . Add mustard , when it crackles , add green chilies , urad dal , red chilies , asafoetida and curry leaves .
- If adding onions , add now and saute for a minute or so.
- Add the cooked peanuts . Add sambar powder and salt and mix well .
- Garnish with coconut and coriander leaves.
- Serve and relish .
