Paruppu Thogaiyal/ Lentil Chutney

 

 

The Tamilnadu cuisine has a variety of thogaiyal and pachadis in its menu .This offers not only variety but also a filling and tastier side dish to rice . The Thogaiyal which is basically a thick chutney is made of a variety of spices and vegetables . This particular thogaiyal is made of dal , , mostly Tuvar dal ( red gram dal) which is unique and tasty .

Ingredients

 

  1. Red Gram dal ( Tuvar dal )  half a cup
  2. Ghee One tablespoon
  3. Dried red chilies 3 to 4
  4. Salt three fourth teaspoons
  5. Asafoetida ( optional) Hing  One fourths of a teaspoon
  6. Shredded coconut a handful

Method

  • In a shallow pan, add ghee and heat it .
  • Add the dal and shallow fry to light brown . Add dried red chilies too and fry.
  • Add Asafoetida and salt and a teaspoon or two of water and  grind to make a thick paste .
  • Tasty thogaiyal is ready to be eaten with Kootu , Rasam and rice .
