Onion Thuvaiyal or Thogaiyal / Vengaaya Thuvaiyal

 

 

Onion Thuvaiyal , is a thick chutney kind of accompaniment with rice , which is quick to make and tastes divine.

The thogaiyal will remain unspoilt,  for a few days , if refrigerated.  Onions are easily available at home and this dish can be made with very little ingredients . The thogaiyal , tastes spicy and pairs well with rice and with other South Indian breakfast menu too .

Ingredients

  1. Onions    4  ( medium size )
  2. Tamarind     lemon size
  3. Salt     1 teaspoon
  4. Dried red chilies   10 to 12
  5. Asafoetida ( Hing)  1/2 teaspoon
  6. Oil   2  teaspoons
  7. Mustard  1/2 teaspoon
  8. Curry leaves  few
  9. Black gram dal 3 teaspoons
  • Method

  •  Chop onions roughly . In a kadai , add oil , and heat it . Add red chilies , black gram dal , tamarind , asafoetida  and  chopped onions and shallow fry.
  •  After a minute , transfer to a mixie jar and  grind to a rough paste, without adding water .
  • In the same kadai , add a little oil and add mustard and curry leaves .
  • Add to the ground paste and grind just for a few seconds.
  • Adjust the  quantity of tamarind , chilies and salt according to your taste.
