Gooseberry is loaded, with abundant of benefits and its easily available in most parts of India. Its age defying properties, make it a sought after berry in Ayurveda and Unani Medicines .
This high fibre , anti oxidant, high iron content , rich in Vitamin C and storehouse of many minerals, is also known as poor man’s apple . It has amazing cholesterol reducing properties and promotes heart health . Its very good for the kidneys too. It helps in prevention of stones in kidneys and gall bladder . It prevents mouth ulcers and stomach disorders too .
You can make a juice of the gooseberry with honey , as an early morning drink for children, to give strength to the bones . It can be taken as pickle too and is tasty when eaten with rice.

Ingredients
- Gooseberry 2 cups
- Sesame Oil 1/4 cup
- Rock Salt 1/4 cup
- Chili powder 1/4 cup
- Fenugreek seeds 1 teaspoon
- Asafoetida ( Hing)1/2 teaspoon
- Turmeric Powder 1/2 teaspoon
- Mustard 1 1/2 teaspoon
Method
- In a sauce pan add water and boil the gooseberries . When they are well cooked and soft . Drain them and keep aside .
- Please see to that they should be soft to press. Chop them to bits of medium size ,removing the seed .
- In a deep bottomed pan ,dry roast fenugreek seeds for a minute in low flame . Powder and keep aside .
- Heat oil in the pan. Add mustard and when it crackles , add chopped gooseberries , turmeric powder and asafoetida .
- Shallow fry for 4 to 5 minutes .
- Add salt and chili powder and stir well .
- Remove from heat and add hot water ( a small ladle) and mix well.
