Nel Pori Urundai ,is generally prepared , on Karthigai Deepam day . Its made as snack too , in many houses of Tamilnadu . Many shops in small towns and villages, in Tamilnadu , stock this sweet commonly. Its a healthy, harmless and tasty snack for children and adults , alike. It can be prepared at home too and relished.
Ingredients
- Nel Pori or Paddy flakes 4 cups
- Jaggery 1 cup
- Coconut ( cut into thin slices ) a handful
- Dry ginger powder half a teaspoon
- Cardamom 1/2 a teaspoon
Method
- In a deep bottomed pan or wok/ Uruli , add jaggery with a ladle of water and dissolve .
- Let the jaggery solution boil, in low heat and become thick.
- Keep a bowl of water nearby . Take a little of the syrup and drop into the water .
- The syrup should’nt dissolve in water, but stay firm . Roll into a ball with your fingers . If it reaches this stage, the jaggery is ready tobe added to the Paddy flakes .
- If not, continue cooking the jaggery, till it gets to that stage .
- Add to the the paddy flakes and mix thoroughly , with a long ladle.
- Grease your hands and take a little of the mixture and roll into balls .
- Repeat till you exhaust the mixture .
- Lovely tasty Nel Pori Urundai is ready.
Note
- Use Paagu vellam or jaggery made for this purpose .
- Only if the jaggery consistency is correct the balls can be rolled. Otherwise they will crumble .
