Neer Mor /Spiced Buttermilk/ Masala Chaas

Neer Mor is also known as , Majiga in Telugu ; Taak in Marathi , Neer Majigae in Kannada, Chach in Hindi .It is a summer drink , prepared in most parts of India , during summers .
Simple refreshing , cooling drink , which is very tasty too. It is hydrating and help in restoring lost salt , in the body,  due to excessive sweating .
Simple , refreshing , cooling drink with absolute low calories .
It aids digestion too .
The variety of spices and herbs added to it like cumin , ginger , omam , green chilies , curry leaves , coriander leaves , make it flavorful .
It is said what is Amrith to Gods , Buttermilk is to humans .
In the ancient days, milk was churned to get butter and the left over water or whey, was used to make Buttermilk.
Nothing was wasted .
It’s highly acclaimed in Ayurveda, used as a medicine to cure diarrhoea and dysentery.

Ingredients

  1. Curd  2 cups
  2. Water   4 to 6 cups
  3. Curry leaves  few
  4. Asafoetida / Hing / Perungaayam   1/2 teaspoon
  5. Green chilies   4 ( chopped )
  6. Ginger  two inches  ( peeled and chopped )
  7. Salt   as desired
  8. Coriander leaves  ( chopped )   a handful
  9. Roasted Cumin seed Powder  1 teaspoon
  10. Ice cubes     few

Method

  • Blend the curd and water, together  in a blender , to a smooth mixture .
  • Make a paste of green chilies and ginger
  • Add salt ,  hing,  chili ginger paste ,curry leaves and coriander leaves .Stir .
  • Add cumin seed powder and ice cubes .
  • Serve immediately .
  • You can add some mint leaves and carom seeds too , to get a different flavour .
  • Just a blend of curd ,water , salt and hing too, makes for a delicious butter milk.
