Kaalan is a Keralite delicacy . Its a part of Onam Sadya menu . Its also made regularly by Palghat Brahmin community . Basically many of the Kerala cuisine, has loads of coconut and coconut oil usage in it . This too is one such recipe . Use  slightly sour curd for the recipe to get the authentic taste .

Ingredients

  1. Curds / Thick buttermilk ( slightly sour )  2 cups
  2. Yam / Chenai or Raw Green Banana   chopped medium size  3/4 cup
  3. Salt as per your taste
  4. Turmeric Powder   1/2 teaspoon
  5. Coconut oil 2 teaspoon
  6. Green chili   2 ( chopped )
  7. Coconut (grated)   1/2 to 1 cup

Method

  • Churn the curd or buttermilk well and keep aside .
  • Cook the chopped vegetable ,adding salt and turmeric powder.
  • When well cooked , add the curd and cook in low heat .
  • As it boils , after some time it starts foaming . Remove the foam with a teaspoon and collect in a bowl.
  • Grind the coconut ,green chilies and foam to a thick smooth paste .
  • When the curd reduces to half its quantity, add the ground paste and mix well .
  • Cook for 2 to 3 minutes and drizzle coconut oil over the top.
  • Kaalan is ready to eaten with hot rice and Pappad .
