Payasam is usually made when there is a birthday or a festive occasion in an Indian household. I. Also many a happy occasion like a birth of a child, success in exams of children, promotion or arrival of relatives or a dear friend is celebrated by making Kheer or payasam. No Indian wedding is complete without the payasam and its usually served at the end of the meal. However one doesn’t need an occasion to follow to enjoy a dessert. This dessert can be served hot or cold.
The Green gram payasam , is healthy, tasty payasam with goodness of green gram, accentuated by the jaggery and nuts .

Ingredients
- Green gram dal – ¾ cup,
- Jaggery – 1 cup,
- Cardamom – 5 to 6 in numbers,
- Cashew nuts – 20,
- Milk – 1 cup,
- Ghee – 1 tablespoon,
- Water – 2 cups .
Method
- Pressure cook dal till its cooked soft, adding water and half of the milk.
- In a broad vessel , add cooked dal and crumble the jaggery into it.
- When it dissolves ,add rest of the milk and boil till it becomes a mushy mass.
- In a small seasoning pan, add ghee, as it heats up, add cashews and raisins. Remove as soon as the cashews turn brown and raisins puff up.
- Add to the payasam.
- Delicious payasam is ready to serve.
Note
- You could also add , coconut milk instead of plain milk, however you should, add the coconut milk in the end and should boil for a few seconds before removing from fire.
- You could also add a mixture of green gram dal ½ cup and one handful of Bengal gram dal and another handful of Rice, mixed and cooked together, to make the payasam.
- Reduce the quantity of jaggery , if needed.
