Thick tamarind gravy with vegetables and spices.
This traditional Tamilnadu dish is an excellent accompaniment for Idly , Dosai , Pongal and many South Indian breakfast items .
Gothsu will be tasty with rice too ,so it could be prepared in large quantity for morning breakfast and can be carried over for lunch .
Some vegetables like Brinjals , Onions , Chenai (yam ), karunakazhangu or plaintain(Vazhaikai), taste best in Gothsu
In the Gothsu recipe given below, we are using a combination of brinjals and onions
Ingredients
Chopped brinjals 1 cup
Onions 1 chopped medium size
Tamarind 20 gms as big as a lemon
Dried red chillies 6
Fenugreek seeds 1/2 teaspoon
Coriander seeds 2 teaspoon
Bengal gram dal 1 teaspoon
Mustard 1 teaspoon
Sesame oil 2 tablespoon
Asafoetida 1/2 teaspoon
Curry leaves 8 to 10
Green chillies 2 chopped
Salt as desired
Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
Method
Soak tamarind in one half cups of water for 15 minutes .
In a kadai/cheenachatti, shallow fry bengal gram dal , coriander seeds , fenugreek seeds and red chillies
When the dal becomes light brown , powder to a fine texture .
Heat Sesame oil , in the same kadai , add mustard .
When it splutters , add asafoetida, green chillies , curry leaves and saute .
Add chopped onions and brinjals , shallow fry . Extract juice from soaked tamarind , add to the vegetables .
Add salt, turmeric powder and stir .
When it boils for four to five minutes , add the prepared powder and cook in low flame for another 4 minutes .
The Gothsu will turn thicker ,
Garnish with coriander leaves (optional) and curry leaves .
Serve hot .
Tastes great with hot rice and paruppu thogaiyal.
Note
Aubergine or big sized brinjals can be roasted , peeled , mashed and added to the Gothsu.
Raw banana too can boiled with skin , peeled and mashed and then added to the boiling tamarind juice .
