If you like Vazhaikai /Raw Banana , then you will love this simple yet heavenly dish made of mild flavours of coconut and pepper.
This is primarily a Kerala based cuisine , but its made in other parts of South India especially , Tamilnadu.
Banana cultivation is high in Southern India, therefore, raw Banana is part of the cuisine.
Coconut too is available in plenty in these parts of India , so one can see a heavy usage of coconut in Kerala and Tamilnadu cuisine
Eriseri is made from Chenai (Elephant foot yam ) or Raw Banana (Vazhaikai).Other vegetables are generally avoided for this recipe.
Chow Chow or Chayote or Pumpkin can also be used.

- Raw banana 2 ( chopped medium size cubes )
- Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt 2 teaspoon
- Curry leaves few
- Black pepper 2 teaspoons
- Coconut oil 2 tablespoons
- Coconut grated 1 cup
- Rice 2 teaspoon

Method
- In a electric cooker or pressure cooker , cook the banana pieces , adding turmeric powder, curry leaves and salt .
- Cook till soft . Add coarsely ground black pepper , to the cooked raw banana and mix well , while hot .
- Grind half cup coconut with rice to a smooth paste , adding 1 cup water .
- Add this paste to the cooked banana too .
- Take a kadai , add coconut oil , add mustard .
- When it crackles , add remaining coconut and shallow fry for a minute or so .
- Add the cooked banana and give a stir . Mix well for two minutes or so .
- Wonderful Eriseri is ready .
- Serve hot with rice and rasam
- You can grind red chillies with coconut to get a spicier Eriseri .
- Instead of black pepper , one replace green chillies too .
- ERISERI shouldn’t be watery or thick , it should be a semi solid gravy .
