Ellu Urundai /Sesame seed sweet balls/Til ke Gajak

 

Generally Ellu Urundai is made at the onset of winters or during winters as its heat generating seed. Its named Ellu in Tamil , Til in Hindi ,Nuvvulu in Telugu and Teel in Marathi.

This seed with nutty flavour is made into a sweet with jaggery and its quite popular in the villages. However this sweet  has disappeared from the  cities. Sesame seed is high in proteins , rich in iron and calcium.  It arrests hair fall and promotes heart health .

Sesame seeds are used  with skin and deskinned. To make the Ellu Urundais, you could use the white or the black seeds.

  1. Sesame seeds 4 cups
  2. Jaggery One and half cups (powdered)
  3. Ghee 2 tablespoons

Method

Method

  • Dry roast the sesame seeds till they crackle. Spread them on a tray.
  • In a deep pan / uruli or thick kadai , add a ladle or 1/4 cups of water and dissolve the jaggery . Filter the jaggery syrup.
  • Cook in low heat until it bubbles. Add a drop of the jaggery into a small bowl of water . It should roll into a ball or should be jelly like.
  • If it dissolves , cook the syrup a little more till it gets to the correct consistency.
  • Add the jaggery syrup to the sesame seeds and mix well .
  • Grease you hands with ghee and immediately roll them into small marble size balls .
  • Can be stored for a long time .
  • Ideal snack for children.

  1. People with nut allergy, should avoid this sweet.
  2. Both white and black colour seeds can be used to make the sweet.
