Paruppu Podi or Powder is a tasty powder, which can be added to hot rice and ghee . Its a boon to make and store this powder , as one does’nt need to make kozhambu or koottu for it . It can be eaten with Roasted Applaam or Pappadaam . If you are running short of time, to make even the simplest of menu , all you need is hot rice . Add the Dal Powder and hot ghee or Sesame oil to make a delicious meal which is filling . Potato roast or Ladies finger will be a good side dish too.
Its a boon to students or single working men or women, who are new to cooking .
its available ready made , in most stores these days , but homemade ones definitely have a unique taste.
Its made from Tuvar dal chiefly , but Chutney dal or Pottukadalai too can be added to it. Garlic and some curry leaves when added with dal , gives a different taste , to the podi.
But the basic recipe is as follows.
Ingredients
- Tuvar Dal 2 cups
- Black Pepper corns 1 teaspoon
- Dried Red chilies 6 to 8
- Salt half a handful or as desired .
Method
- In a deep pan , add Tuvar dal and dry roast very well in low heat, till it gives out a nice aroma.
- Add Dry roast Red chillies and Pepper too .
- In a dry food processor , add Tuvar Dal , Red chilies , Pepper corns and Rock salt.
- Grind everything to a smooth powder.
Note
- You can grind the powder to smooth texture or to a slightly coarse powder.
- This powder remains fresh for a month. If making in large scale , take required quantity for a month and rest you refrigerate.
- Add more chilies and pepper , if you need the powder spicy.
- Garlic and curry leaves can be added to enhance the taste.
