Chutneys are a necessity in a most South Indian households. Its a common side dish for Idly , dosai , Idiappams , Utthappams, Thattu idlis etc.
Various types of chutneys are made as an accompaniment. Some common ones are coconut chutney , tomato chutney , mint chutney , coriander chutney, dal chutney , chutney with red chilies , chutney with green chilies, garlic chutney , ground nut chutney, tamarind chutney , onion chutney and the list goes on .
Here is a recipe for Coriander Chutney

- Coriander leaves de stalked and cleaned 2 cups
- Green chilies 4 to 6 ( chopped fine )
- Ginger grated 1 teaspoon
- Salt as desired
- Asafoetida 1/4 teaspoon
- Coconut grated ( optional) 1/2 cup
- Tamarind marble size
- For seasoning
- Oil 1 teaspoon
- Mustard 1 teaspoon
- Dried Red chilies 2 to 4 ( broken into two )

- In a Food processor or Mixie , add the above ingredients and grind to a smooth paste .
- In a sauce pan , add oil and heat . Add mustard and when it crackles , add dried chilies and saute for a minute .Season the chutney.
- Ready to serve with the South Indian breakfast .

Note
- You can add Pottu kadalai or Chutney dal too, to the chutney .
- Add more green chilies or red chilies to increase the spice level.
