These Powders or podi are a part of daily meal menu in South India. Podi or Powders are usually mixed with rice and a drizzle of ghee or gingelly oil is added and eaten . Many households make and store these powders like paruppu podi, coconut podi, coriander podi, ellu or sesame podi, etc. So when one is in a hurry or do not have time to cook an elaborate meal, these podi or powders come in handy. They can be mixed with rice and ghee to can make a sumptuous meal. They provide adequate vitamins and minerals too and are filling. Some powders have medicinal properties too, like ANGAYA PODI. However making of these powder has slowly disappeared from most households. When compared to store bought powders , home made ones , score more over hygiene, quality and freshness.

Ingredients
- Coriander seeds 1/2 cup,
- Peppercorns 2 tsp,
- Cumin seeds 3 tsp,
- Dried neem flower a handful,
- Dried chukku one small piece,
- Sundakkai/ Turkey berry (salted and dried) 20 to 30,
- Asafoetida(compounded) a big piece 50 gms,
- Curry leaves 1/2cup,
- Salt a handful, ( Rock salt preferred )
- Red chillies 4.
Method
- Dry roast all the ingredients one by one, in a deep iron pan/ Kadai or Kalchatti, to reddish brown colour. Shallow fry the salt too.
- Powder all the ingredients together to a fine powder. Bottle when cool.
- Use with hot rice and ghee.
- Can be taken once in fifteen days or a month.
Note
- The turkey berry in the powder, gets rid of intestinal worms, gastritis, helps in preventing kidney disease. It controls hypertension too.
- The neem flower and curry leaves help to keep our skin healthy prevents ulcer ,stomach upsets and balances all the doshas in the body.
- This also can be given to women, post delivery.
