One of the easiest breakfast dish or a dinner option is Upma . The Upma are often condemned as tasteless, insipid and boring . However if made with the correct ingredients and with lots of interest and love , this dish becomes a healthy,filling and uplifting food.
Upma is chiefly made from Semolina , but its also made from Vermicelli , Sabudana or Sago , Flattened rice or Aval /Poha , Rice and from Broken Wheat.

- Vermicelli 450 grams (roasted variety )
- Mustard 3 teaspoons
- Black gram or Urad dal 2 teaspoons
- Green chilies 2 ( chopped fine )
- Dried Red chilies 3 (broken into two)
- Asafoetida 1/4 teaspoon
- Curry leaves 8 to 10 (torn into two )
- Grated Ginger 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt 1 1/2 teaspoon
- Cashew nuts 8 to 10 ( broken)
- Shredded coconut ( optional ) 1/2 cup
- Onions 1 chopped (optional)
- Ghee 3 tablespoons
- Water 3 cups ( Hot )
- Lemon juice 1 tablespoon (optional)
- Coriander leaves ( chopped ) 1 tablespoons

Method
Method
- Heat a deep pan or Kadai, add ghee. Add mustard , as it splutters , add dal, green chilies, red chilies , cashew nuts, ginger and curry leaves .
- Add chopped onions . Stir and fry till transluscent
- Add Vermicelli and stir . Add salt , asafoetida and water and mix well .
- Cook in low heat till they become soft , but not lumpy.
- Add shredded coconut and lemon juice . Mix well and serve hot.
- Garnish with coriander leaves.
Note
- Please note , while adding water , add it gradually, so that the whole mixture doesn’t become lumpy after cooking .
- So boil water and keep aside . Add half quantity and then add as required .
- Vegetables like grated carrot , capsicum , peas etc can be added to the Upma.
