Fruit kosumalli (Cantaloupe fruit salad)

This kosumalli is sweet and delicious . The summer months are the  season of muskmelon in India and they are sold  in the street corners in heaps  by vendors. They are round pale yellowish in colour and have a subtle sweet taste. They are made into juice along with milk or chopped into medium sized pieces and sprinkled with sugar and  chilled  in refrigerator and relished.

Musk melon is weight watcher’s delight as it is low in calories and is high in fibre. Its rich in vitamin A and good for skin and heart.

Its body heat reducing qualities, makes it most sought after during the summers.

Cantaloupe or Muskmelon  can be combined with other summer fruits too and made into delicious smoothies and fruit salad.

Ingredients

  • Musk melon half of a medium size one,
  • Cashew nuts ¼ cup OR Nuts of your choice ¼ cup,
  • Sugar ¼ to ½ cup,
  • Pomegranate arils ½ cup,
  • Apples chopped medium size ¼ cup,
  • Grapes green  or black grapes ( with seeds ) chopped 1/4 cup

Method

  1. Cut the fruits into half, deseed and remove skin and chop into medium sized pieces.
  2. Shallow fry the cashews or other nuts of your choice to golden brown in a  pan adding a little ghee or oil.
  3. Chop the nuts or coarsely grind .
  4. Chill the fruits  .
  5. Before serving, add the sugar and the nuts and serve. Enjoy without any guilt.
  6. Makes for an ideal dessert.

Note

  1. Instead of refined sugar you could add brown sugar (nattu sakarai) or even better, drizzle honey over the chopped salad.
  2. Avoid sugar altogether. Choice is yours.
  3. Jack fruit, mango, guava, pineapple ,melon , berries like strawberries, blue berries, black berries can be chopped along with the above salad to make it wholesome.
  4.  Seeds like pumpkin, sunflower seeds or chia seeds can be added to make it more nutritious and interesting.
